GLENCAIRN LIMOUSINS – Rob & Jean Johnstone – Outram, Southland
This week on the PGG Wrightson Stud Tour we visit Rob & Jean Johnstone who have been breeding Limousin cattle for over 20 years and are still passionate about the breed today than they were when they first started, despite the perception about their temperament and the lack of yield graded payment from our national meat processers.
With over 17 years of docility scoring within the Limousin cattle in New Zealand, there is no longer a justified reason to beileve that Limousin are ‘towy’ cattle, demonstrating in this episode the attributes of the breed that improve the meat yield of beef cattle through extra muscling.
Tony Glynn, of Rural TV (NZ) catches up with Linden Sanders of Little Valley Station to see pure-bred Limousin cattle surviving and thriving at over 2,000 ft above sea level in Central Otago and Greg Metherell of Duntroon successful crossing Limousin cattle over his Angus herd achieving hybrid vigour.
This episode is sure to leave you with an improved perception of the Limousin breed and commend Rob & Jean Johnstone’s decades of breeding high yielding beef cattle.
